As for Reagan, the fact remains that most Sovietologists predicted that his hardline would favor reactionary elements in the Kremlin, and exacerbate tension. Instead, it gave us Gorbachev, and kept him in power long after Khruschev had been booted (relative to liberalization). It allowed the problems of the regime to become matters of public debate, and sounded a death blow to faith in the Party. Well, I will not try to settle the matter, I will only say that the lessons remain a matter of debate......
