From fast neutrons? and gamma rays??!!! Sorry. Not true. Radiation sickness set in and within days people that might have survived under their white parasols and sundresses were vomiting blood. Maybe 10% die outright. 90% over the ensuing weeks. They might have thought that for a few days. At the most.

The war was lost. Logistically, the mainland was pretty much doomed. It is likely that the shock brought capitulation. That is certainly the conventional view. But I suppose it could be as you say.......By the way, how was white clothing going to prevent injury?
