The spoof British band created for Rob Reiner's cult favorite rockumentary ``This Is Spinal Tap'' from 1984 has recorded a new song that will be available for download starting Thursday from tongue-in-cheek Tapster.com. ``Back From the Dead'' features Michael McKean, who played Spinal Tap's lead singer David St. Hubbins, Christopher Guest, who was lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel, and Harry Shearer, who was bass player Derek Smalls. ``We're putting it on the Internet because we want the people who really care that we're still alive to have it in their hands and their machinery and then in their ears,'' McKean said, copping a British accent for a telephone interview in character as St. Hubbins. ``If you're a Spinal Tap fan, and God knows there aren't many of them, we wanted to lay it on you,'' he said. ``This Is Spinal Tap'' parodied a pretentious hard rock band trying to soldier on despite a dwindling fan base. The movie is being rereleased in theaters and on DVD and videotape in September. McKean, Guest and Shearer have periodically regrouped for recordings, appearances and even a guest spot on ``The Simpsons.'' The new song fits the Spinal Tap theme, dealing with ``this bunch of old dinosaur bones that can still move around,'' McKean said. Spinal Tap's future lies in a ``carefully regulated series of breakups and comebacks,'' McKean said. ``That's what attracts the attention.'' The group is using Tapster.com as a spoof of Napster, a site that allows computer users to download copyrighted songs for free. In a Spinal Tap news release, ``Tufnel'' said Napster simply offers too many songs. A Federal judge on Wednesday barred the real company, Napster, from trading music online pending a trial. ``One of the brilliant things about Tapster is that there's only one song to choose from,'' Tufnel said. - On the Internet: tapster.com
