Solaris runs on, e.g., Compaq's Intel-based machines, so I guess those must be the "proprietary hardware with no signs of relief in the foreseeable future" to which you refer.

It's Windows that is the "proprietory OS" that is losing momentum. IA-64 is losing steam, too.

PC's are now often used as little more than network terminals, Moore's law or not. Microsoft has recently been attempting to embrace that idea as if they'd invented it.

Unix is open. So is Java. Windows is proprietary.

1B PC's, Palm Pilots, and other devices connected to a network of Sun (and other) servers. Commodities connected to value. That is indeed the vision.

Somebody must think the stuff Scott is shipping is reliable and worthwhile, because it's selling like hotcakes.
