Jay, Steve and Others...

The RIAA actions will only solidify support for Napster (and against the recording industry) and accelerate the search for alternatives much more pernicious than Napster's solution. At least with a central server they had a means of monitoring traffic. They could have used that mechanism to create some type of payment scheme or other alternative. Now they are sending music downloading underground where they will have no idea of its magnitude accept as it relates to the decimation of CD sales.

If we had a greater installed DSL/cable modem base in the US people would be sending e-mails with MP3 attachments like there is no tomorrow. The RIAA is only postponing the eventuality of a compromise between the current system and the Internet-based system that is threatening their very existence.
