Re: "With MSFT in the DJIA, of course it will affect that average, which is widely perceived to represent "the market." And lemmings who base their moves on movement of the Dow amplify its influence. But if MSFT were such a good proxy for "the market" how could "the market" be up as much as it is over the past couple of years with MSFT essentially flat?"

First of all in every reference of my post I stated "the markets" and not "the market" as you alluded to.

Secondly if you will go to the following charts taken over 2year time frame you will see that MSFT a) was NOT flat but the DJI & S&P were in comparison, b) shows a remarkable downturn just before the NASDAQ!

compared to DJI:
bigchart.com

compared to S&P:
bigchart.com

compared to NASDAQ:
bigchart.com

Once again I have confidence that MSFT will show a remarkable recovery sometime later this year and the NASDAQ will likely have a better go at it's ascension.

I do not view this as a lemmings effect as you but rather that technology follows MSFT's lead, hence ORCL/SUNW's fears as well as others! IMO.
