Capitulation in 1987. When you saw 40 percent of your net worth go down the tubes and you had little children and you wondered how they would go to college. That's when you saw capitualtion.
When you sold 1000 shares of GE for $29 a share because $29,000 was a lot of money (which today would be worth $1,200,000) that was capitulation. If we ever get that kind again it will take a very long time for this market to come back. IMHO.
