Electronic Stock Exchanges One Step Closer to Opening in Canada

Sun, 30 Jul 2000, 10:24am EDT

Toronto, July 29 (Bloomberg) -- Securities regulators
published rules for alternative trading systems yesterday and
officially requested proposals from organizations that want to set
up a network tying them all together, moving one step closer to
allowing electronic stock exchanges to open in Canada, the Globe
and Mail reported. The electronic exchanges will compete for
business with traditional markets such as the Toronto Stock
Exchange, and will probably appeal to institutional investors who
will want to trade large blocks of stock at the cheapest possible
price. The regulators want the final rules governing alternative
trading systems to be set by December and aim for electronic
exchanges to begin operating as early as the middle of 2001, the
paper said, citing Ontario Securities Commission manager of market
regulation Randee Pavalow.
