smithers,
I agree 100%. I have some friends in the music biz and it is one of the most corrupt and unethical industries around. Hell, even after an artist becomes successful, they are usually so far in debt to the label that they are practically indentured servants. All because they didn't understand that those contracts are really loan agreements.

I talked about this on the MPPP thread a bit some time ago and this comment might give you an idea what I think about the people in the music biz (not talking about he musicians)

So I agree that the internet should even the playing field a bit, but I also believe that an artist has the right to be compensated over some college students right to get free music. It is the artists decision. I also believe that it is a self correcting problem. If all of a sudden the musicians stop making money (remember, they are usually heavily in debt to the record label and aren't as rich as most people think), I think that we will have a lot fewer musicians devoting their time to playing music as they will be busy selling cars at the local car lot (that is about to be put out of business by the internet too).

I have a friend (actually, the wife of a friend) who had 3 very successful albums under a record label and then she had a run in with them and she decided to self publish and self promote. First she started selling her tapes and CDs at her concerts and now she sells on the internet. This only works for her though because she was established. Without promotion, it will be very difficult for most bands to get off of the ground.
