Re: Intel is down 12% since earnings. AMD is down 24%.

You have a good point, Intel's recent performance, especially in light of the details in its earnings report, has been very good. Right or wrong, some aspects of that report certainly could be questioned. Those weren't all straightforward earnings from operations.

But the most recent news is pretty amazing. I guess I missed it's significance at first, but the more I think about Intel's announcement that Coppermines were being targeted for their new .13 process the more stunning I find the news.

Itanium is looking less and less competitive as SUN finally gets the USIII back on track. If USIII is at 900MHZ this fall and Itanium is at 800MHZ, Itanium is probably not going to make much progress against the entrenched sector leader. It looks like the 64 bit program is facing some problems.

Now Intel has decided it is better off using some or all of next fall's .13 wafer allocations for Coppermine instead of Willamette. So news on the Willamette front can't be great and it looks like the 32 bit program is facing some problems.

A year after the Athlon first shipped, K6 starts are being rapidly ramped down, just like the Pentium took about a year to displace the 486. A year after Willamette first ships, it looks like Intel plans to select Coppermine to run on a substantial portion of it's latest process.

Frank - Re: "It was funny to see the mood change in the last 1/2 hour of trading yesterday when AMD lost almost all its gains for the day and closed essentially flat."

Wow ! You saw that too !!

Those 'droids went from butt-slapping each other to nearly stunned-silence during that time period.

What a collection of clowns !!

Ol' SpryGuy returned and sure-as-shooting - started making predictions for AMD to go to the moon - and then had to EAT HIS WORDS as AMD settled back down to earth's gravitational pull.
