I have a config.dos, but no autoexec.dos on this win98 PC.
The .dos files have something to do with booting into dos mode ( dos box or safe mode ???? ) but I can't remember exactly how it's used, and didn't find it right away in my win98 books. I can check further later, but have to run now, maybe this small clue will help you find it before I return.

I have both files (the autoexec.dos and config.dos files ) in root directory. Running 98 upgraded to SE.
