My guess is that SYSTEM.DAT and USER.DAT are the toughest files to fix if an installation goes wrong. Most other stuff can be deleted or re-copied from source, but these two registry files are so tough to fix and so easy to back-up, the back-up option is the only choice that makes sense.

The paranoid will make copies of all .INI files on their system too. Fortunately, they aren't too many or too big. (Skip the DESKTOP.INI(s), but don't forget the 'hidden' ones.)

P.S. While you're backing-up .INI files, take a peek and see if anything you don't like is happening. Sometimes we discover choices we didn't know we had.
