BellSouth, MHC investment to total $200 million

BellSouth and its partner MultiHolding Corp. (MHC) plan to invest a total of $200 million in
PCS operator BellSouth Guatemala through year-end 2001, a BellSouth Guatemala press
representative said.

To date, BellSouth Guatemala has invested over half that amount in its Guatemala
operation, including a contract worth about $100 million with Canadian equipment supplier
Nortel Networks for the deployment of a CDMA network.

BellSouth (BLS: Research, Estimates) also has had to pay some $9 million for
infrastructure requirements such as rights of way and tower co-location, as well as $26
million for its operating license. The remaining $65 million will cover service and operating
costs, the spokesman said.

Both BellSouth and MHC will share financing responsibilities, in approximately the same
ratio as their respective interests in BellSouth Guatemala, the spokesman said. BellSouth
holds 60 percent of BellSouth Guatemala, while MHC owns the remainder.

BellSouth Guatemala will compete with Comcel Guatemala, incumbent operator Telgua,
and Spain's Telefonica through its subsidiary Telefonica Guatemala.

One interesting idea is if Qualcomm spins off its business and remains a royalty machine is left, a long term structure might be to convert Qualcomm to a trust, so that royalites can be distributed directly to shareholders and they are subject to a single tax at the beneficiary level.
