India mulls 3G auctions
By Total Telecom staff

28 July 2000

The Department of Telecommunications in India is planning an auction of third-generation mobile licenses, according to local press reports.

The government has been watching the developments of 3G auctions around the world with some interest, and was particularly impressed by the success of the 3G auctions in the United Kingdom, which raised £22.5 billion (US$34.42 billion).

The DoT Secretary, Shymal Ghosh, said in an interview with The Economic Times in India that a focus group has been set up to determine the methodology to be followed for the auctions.

India's defense and space research programs currently use the frequency that would be auctioned. A large number of Indian cellular operator, including BPL and Orange, have already expressed interest in third-generation services.
