Hi NightOwl; I've thought some more on the sense amp thing, and have to change my mind. The newer design will end up with less power consumption than otherwise:

If you have fewer sense amps, then that means that your rows have to be shorter, and you have more of them. Since there are more rows, it means that the chance of getting a row hit will be reduced, hence longer latency. But since there are fewer sense amps, there will clearly be less power consumption. Sorry for the earlier confusion.

P.S. The difference between understanding this technology and not is probably only a few nanoseconds...
