RE: Dear semiconeng: Your's is the only reply so far, but I think it makes my point. All this gigahertz talk seems to me to be merely muscle flexing. Unless you're a weight lifter whats the point? I vote for durability, and SIMPLICITY. JDN

Agreed. At the time I bought my 500MHz, I could have gone for the faster "cutting edge, higher MHz", but with my limited budget, I decided instead to put the money into the 256MB system RAM, and 32MB Video. Today, I'm STILL happy that I did it that way.

Who has the fastest, processor is pretty irrelevant to me. The intel stock that I've been holding since 1983 has split 6 times, and the 1983 shares now have an effective purchase price of ~ 50 cents.

I guess my investment philosophy is different from those on that "other board", but I'm still pretty satisfied with the investments that I made 17 years ago, when I got into this business. I'm not running out to sell anytime soon.

JDN,
Don't kid yourself. Megahertz Sells (TM McMannis)...and will continue to sell. Intel knows this. Why to do think Intel keeps launching faster Coppermines without much volume at those speeds when the real sweet spot is hundreds of Mhz lower? Why do you think Willy was redesigned for Mhz speed and will launch at 1.4 gigahertz? Faster than Athlon.
You need the speed to command the price premium.
