TORONTO, July 29 /CNW/ - Chapters Inc. would like to take this
opportunity to respond to recent reports in the media about our business and
the publishing industry at large.

CHAPTERS IS ON SOLID FINANCIAL FOOTING
- Chapters has increased revenue and profit each year since it was
founded and we are on track for another financially healthy year
- We have successfully built a national network of 320 stores and the
investment in this Canadian network is essentially complete. In the
current fiscal year, Chapters will be cash positive
- Our long-term financing is secure and provides us with a solid base to
continue as a healthy and successful retailer for years to come
- Our current operating line of credit is guaranteed and secure and is
within anticipated parameters. In fact, like we have each year for the
past 5 years, we expect to have the operating line paid off in its
entirety by Christmas Day. This operating line is a normal part of the
seasonality of our business

CHAPTERS ENJOYS POSITIVE RELATIONS WITH CANADIAN PUBLISHING PARTNERS
- Today's story in the National Post is factually incorrect and grossly
misleading
- Chapters and HarperCollins Canada had already resolved any outstanding
issues and currently enjoy an ongoing working relationship
- Claude Primeau, president of HarperCollins Canada refutes the facts
provided by the "unnamed source" quoted in the article and has issued
the following statement to clarify his company's position. "Chapters is
in good financial standing with HarperCollins and we have every
confidence about our future relationship with this valued partner."
- Returns are an industry-wide issue and Chapters is committed to taking
a leadership role in addressing this issue with our publishing partners

CHAPTERS IS A LEADING CANADIAN RETAILER
- Chapters was recently named Innovative Retailer of the Year by the
Retail Council of Canada for our work to deliver an exceptional
shopping experience for Canadians
- A recent Kubas Major Market Retailing Report has again ranked Chapters
as the top retailer in Canada outranking 130 other retailers for the
fourth year in a row

Chapters takes action for libel against National Post

TORONTO, Aug. 1 /CNW/ - Chapters Inc. today announced it is immediately
delivering a Notice of Libel against the National Post for its July 29 and
July 31, 2000 series of 11 inaccurate and irresponsible articles that have
caused serious harm to the company's reputation. This is the first required
legal step in commencing an action for libel.
"The articles published about Chapters in the National Post on July 29
and July 31 contained numerous misleading statements, factual errors,
unfounded speculation, and inflammatory headlines," says Chapters CEO Larry
Stevenson. "Chapters is on solid financial footing and is ranked as Canada's
top retailer by Kubas Major Market Retailing Report and has been for the last
four years. The Post's 11-article-attack paints a distorted picture of
Chapters Inc."
Chapters' initial review of the articles identified more than 30 factual
errors, unsubstantiated allegations and misleading statements.
