Actually the structures are the work of the Aborigines, who long ago developed an export in metals. Unfortunately their enterprise was subject to the whims of Pheonecian speculators and a bubble in bronze age manufactures and they went bust. Having no reason to sit on the shore and mine metals they decided to look for the next 'neat idea', and began wandering the continent.

Eventually they discovered that the looking was the thing. And decided to do it as a profession; when they weren't dreaming about an even better place--which they decided was where they were anyway.

Gives us all an idea of where we are headed I think.
