Michael, that is very good. The fact is that regionality and home state loyalty are weaker than they were even 20 years ago. Hardly anyone will vote the ticket because the vice presidential candidate is from their state, let alone their area. The quality of the candidate, what it signals about the impending Administration, and whatever meaningful symbolism can be generated matter more. Of course the Kemp pr guy would talk about generating excitement. I like Kemp, but he was a lousy vice- presidential pick, too emotional and undisciplined, too much of a hot dog, and he detracted slightly from the ticket. Cheney will not upset any apple carts or embarrass anyone. He is, however, articulate and appealing in a different way: he is smart, reflective, and exudes reliability. There is hardly anyone the Democrats have available to put up against him who will not look bad in contrast. He also makes it clear that the Administration is not playing games, but will be a conservative Administration. After the "Wolf in sheeps clothing" routine of the Clintons, the upfrontness is refreshing. Finally, he symbolizes the last great Republican success: Desert Storm, where the team functioned smoothly and the primary goals were accomplished with all deliberate speed........
