Well, now that you've told me imdb's history, I'm going to watch it as a kind of "case-study".

A lot of dot coms are really lame but a few of them had a pretty good concept that was killed by the infusion of too much cash and the egos of the founders. Wine.com burned through over 100mm$$, can you believe that? There is no way they can make it unless they start doing 20,000 orders a day. My guess is they do about 1000 orders/day right now. Had they set up a small scale operation with a few people and management, then they might have survived but not now. Women.com is another one - 200+ employees with 50 VPs or something like that, this is because a large employee base is attractive to acquirers, but who wants to acquire women.com? Women.com should be a 20 person company.
