Ted,

The period of major earthquakes is about 200-250 years in LA, and 100-150 years in SF.

There hasn't been a large earthquake in an urban area in CA. since 1906, though there were a few medium sized quakes that did some damage (like Loma Prieta in 1989 and Northridge.)

Ted,

in a million years, CA's two plates will have shifted so much that SF will be a suburb of LA.

It will take a lot longer than a million years, but eventually LA will be adjacent to the eastern part of San Francisco.

Most of the residents of LA will leave before then, because it is too cold for them in SF.
