I don't remember seeing this posted before. I apologise if it is a duplicate.

New story at Businessweek which mentions inflight aircraft telecommunications that features Qualcom and G*.

...Communication to and from the network on the ground will be through geosynchronous connection and Qualcomm's low-earth-orbit GlobalStar satellite network. Some passengers may even find that their laptops perform better in the air -- bandwidth and speed will be about the same as through a cable modem....

I'm very pleased to report that Geoff Goodfellow is still reading this thread (and still maintains his short squeeze temporary long position), but only posts when he thinks he has something of value to add or to de-bunk/correct inaccurate information (or the sometimes biased) LONG postings, the last of this nature occurred on July 23rd.

With respect to Iridium phone usage: several days after my posting the plug got pulled and i can no longer use the phone with my CZ land GSM provider SIM chip. Last time i ever blab like that on the net! :)

Hello Souze

Any Iridium users out there who will comment? I have a friend in Reed City Michigan, who's wife is from the Philippine's. They told me there is one phone 15 miles from where her parents live. When the Iridium system became available they purchased one of the phone's at the astronomically high price of $2500 or so. They were only able to use the phone for a relatively short period of time before the company told them they were going out of business. Talk about some ticked off people. They were able to use the phone up to a few months ago for free, little reprieve. The service has been shut down at least for the Philippines. I asked them if they were planning on buying a satellite phone from Globalstar. They stated they were still ticked off about the loss of service and that they have a phone which is only worth 1/5 trade in on a G* phone.
The positive to this story is that they were contacted by a G* representative. Hopefully G* has a list of all the Iridium customers who are without service and continues to contact them until they come on board the G* service.
