An Amazon spokeswoman said the service center, the company's first in Asia, will have native Japanese speakers answer telephone queries from Japanese customers. Already, a substantial number of Japanese consumers log on to Amazon's U.S. Web site, making Japan the company's biggest export market. The service center "is our next step in expanding our global customer service network," the spokeswoman said. Japanese media reports have speculated that Amazon.com will open a Japanese version of its Web site, perhaps by the middle of 2001. Amazon's spokeswoman wouldn't confirm or deny that possibility. "We don't comment or speculate on launches," she said. "
