Cisco: Raising the minority stakes
July 31, 2000
by Stefani Lako Baldwin

#1 Cisco Systems (CSCO)

Market cap: $477 billion (as of 7/28/00)

Fund name: None. Handles investments through its business development division.

Kicked off: 1996

Size: $13 billion in investments, market value and cash.

Strategy: Cisco does not invest through venture capital firms. It seeks minority stakes in
companies that share its overall market strategy. Cisco's approach is a blend of partnerships
with other companies, such as Hewlett Packard (HP) and IBM (IBM), and acquisitions and
investments.

The chosen: To date, Cisco has invested $1.89 billion in 120 companies. Companies that
receive an infusion of Cisco cash tend to concentrate on optical networking, wireless
technologies, voice-over IP, broadband and content networking.

Scenix: Offers communication software for embedded applications.

Magma Design Automation: Designs electronic software systems.

Centerpoint Broadband Technologies: An optical networking company.

Technology Control Services: Offers software architecture for network operators.

Belle Systems: Specializes in advanced servicing, management and billing systems.

Riversoft: Infrastructure management solutions for ISPs.

Digital Fountain: Develops high performance content delivery systems.

Grabbing it all: Acquisitions remain an integral part of Cisco's overall corporate strategy.
Indeed, between January and June of this year, Cisco brought 12 companies into the fold.
Recent acquisitions include: HyNEX; Qeyton Systems, ArrowPoint Communications, Seagull
Semiconductor and PentaCom. Cisco recently announced plans to acquire NuSpeed Internet
Systems in a $450 million stock swap. NuSpeed created technology that links storage networks
with communication networks.

Street guide: Cisco is getting some good returns from investments. Two companies in which it
holds a minority stake, Quantum Effect Devices (QEDI) and Nuance Communications (NUAN),
went public this year and put $107 million of share value into Cisco's books. Jim Wade, a
managing director at Deutsche Bank Alex. Brown, likes Cisco's venturing. The company, he
says, tends to use investments as a way to check out new technologies and identify potential
acquisitions. Wade says this strategy is what makes Cisco such a great acquirer: "They bet
early and when you bet early you have an advantage."

Get out the map: With billions on its books resulting from these investments, look for Cisco to
remain aggressive. According to The Corporate Venturing Report, Cisco invested in seven
companies in the first six months of this year alone.

Gary( re:contracts and links) CSCO has been historically doing business only with Hong-Kong unit of C&W, which is very small compare to the rest of C&W.
Even before merger with ALA, NN was vendor of choice for
C&W core/edge in Europe, UK and international network.
Also ALA/NN is doing lots of business with C&W US.
CSCO on the other hand got only small C&W Hong-Kong.
BTW, thanks for your effort of posting CSCO contract
on ALA thread.
When CSCO will win few contracts with worth several hundreds
of million like NN(ALA) did then we'll talk.See below(1999)
contracts and links( at the end of post)
