The tricks I remember:

BOLD using "b" and "/b"
ITALIC using "i" and "/i"
1234
using "pre" and "/pre" for mono-text (not a very exciting example but useful for tables)

Substitute the " with <> above. Probably other tricks and there is likely someplace on SI which explains... or maybe not. Or you can try the "Color Test Thread 1.2" at Subject 36425
