Here's the complete lead-in to the EDM white paper....

EDM Network Backups

The EDM system is a complete, high-performance database backup system. It provides unattended backup in environments of heterogeneous servers, rapidly expanding neworks, or where data backup is decentralized, random, or nonexistent. EDM can use a network infrastructure to perform all backup and restore operations. This has proven to be very effective in environments with very large databases. Utilizing the network infrastructure, client data from the database servers is pushed by the clients over the client network to the EDM. As the data is received, EDM streams the data to the available tape media.

The network implementation of EDM enables separate control and data paths from the EDM client, enabling parallel data movement. The EDM client component formats the data for backup and restore, retries busy files, and allows client-initiated restore capability through the interface. The EDM backup server acts as a high-speed data sink handling all network communications.........

Serverless backup is obviously taking a number of different forms, says EMC's Krongelb. "But as more and more companies are involved in the Internet and therefore require constant uptime and minimal impact on the other resources," Krongelb says, "the more companies will need the benefits that serverless backup provides."
