To see DSL as dominating because it is already in place is a very near-sighted attitude IMHO (BTW i have had a very satisfactory DSL connection for over a year). The fact that is already in place means that it is an old infrastructure, one that is quickly being replaced by new infrastructure of fibre. Yes, it is a strong technology now because it does an incredible job of taking advantage of a dying infrastructure. Certainly it far outperforms the traditional 56K modem, but I just don't see how it will progress with Moore's law-like speed

I really don't see how DSL is going to survive the upgrade to Fibre optic. When we all have a Fibre Optic cable going directly to our living room home entertainment center, why would we add an old copper cable that has been messed with so it could perform passably well? .
