Those numbers seem to make a compelling case for the death penalty as a deterrent. Of course, this dismisses a fundamental tenet of the criminal coddling left's argument against the death penalty.

Don't confuse an ageing population and greater prosperity with a deterence factor in the death penalty. Crime goes down with greater opportunity (another reason that Clinton is the greatest President in our lifetime). You must remember that 1981 followed the great oil slump and largest layoffs in Houston's history.

One of these days I am going to review some of the studies on the issue. Common sense says that there is a deterrent effect, but I read that the data is "inconclusive". Maybe if one looked at places where executions were more reliably carried out, it would be more apparent.
