I don't think anyone here wants to talk about the Japanese situation, Mucho... it's a painful topic for ideological purists.

Not only because of this:

ddi.co.jp

But also because of this:

tca.or.jp

The first link shows how DDI/IDO is losing overall market share in Japan - it is simply shuffling subs from the PDC network to the IS-95 network. DoCoMo and Japan Telecom are actually increasing their subscriber bases by focusing on a single digital standard.

The key info in the second link is in "Internet Provider Services" box. Apparently Japan Telecom's PDC-based, 9.6 kbps mobile internet is beating the DDI/IDO mobile internet program in the marketplace. The May/June subscriber growth disparity between J-phone and DDI/IDO is eye-popping.

If this trend continues, Japan Telecom will pass the combined DDI/IDO/Tu-Ka mobile internet subscriber base by Christmas.

Last year, Japan Telecom was cast as the hidebound, obstinate old dinosaur clinging to PDC while the sexy young thang DDI cruised to victory. The only problem with this exciting script is that it was a complete fantasy.
