You're right, Nextel has consumed considerably more capital expenditures for significantly less coverage than G*, which would seem to be a huge advantage for G*. Theoretically they should be able to sell minutes for less than any terrestrial operator, but they don't. Why? Because as you suggested they don't have control of pricing or distribution.

Seems to me G* would be able to quickly sell all the minutes they could handle from USA coverage alone. Who wouldn't want 100% geographical coverage for at or below traditional terrestrial prices?

Maybe Bernie has the answer, then again, maybe not.

Ron

In the present situation, with G* really having no competitor outside the boundaries of terrestrial wireless, the SPs are likely to continue lowering prices veeeeerrry slowly.

Oh RS, i'm so disappointed (again). Every single time you do this, and i believe to yours and ever other readers damage of credibility and objectivity. There is another competitor. It's been around for a while. You know about it (but you don't love it). It's even profitable! I've posted many many times about it, but you always Always ALWAYS ignore it. Get your head out of the sand and stop the denial. Could you at least acknowledge it enough in passing to give it even a casual mention or just bite the bullet accept it for once and for all? I can assure that by ignoring it, it will simply not just go away, and in fact, it is currently in the process of building a 4th constellation:

Inmarsat (http:/www.inmarsat.org).
