Why'd you use the opening prices on the 28th instead of the NASD close on the 27th?

Harry J -

3COM information statement suggested use price "immediately after distribution"; dividend shares were to be registered
July 27 @ 5 pm EDT,

FWIW and BTAIM (Be That As It May!)

Best,
SAF

Harry,
I believe COMS closing price on the 27th was about 64 9/16, open on the 28th was 13 3/8. Any other number for the 27th close would be an adjusted number and post or pre market generally aren't liquid enough to provide a reliable valuation. So that's why I think the 28th open is the right value to use.

To quote the 3COM "Information Statement:"

The tax basis in your 3Com common stock immediately prior to the spin-off will be allocated between your PALM common stock and 3Com common stock in proportion to their relative fair market value on the July 27, 2000 distribution date."

I take this to mean one should use the relative closing prices on the 27th to make the apportionment.
