WorldChain and Nortel Networks Debut E-Business Solution for Real-time Global
Spares Operations
August 01, 2000 9:20 AM

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 1, 2000--

WorldChain Announces Immediate Availability of Integrated Solution

with Clarify eFrontOffice

WorldChain Joins Nortel Networks' Clarify E-Business Applications

Software Partner Program

WorldChain, Inc., the leader in Internet-powered automation and collaboration solutions for trading partner networks, today
announced the availability of a new integrated solution for managing global spares operations.

The integrated offering combines WorldChain's solution for value chain operations with Nortel Networks(a) (NYSE/TSE:NT)
Clarify(a) eFrontOffice, a premier e-business and customer relationship management (CRM) suite. This new powerful Internet
application enables manufacturing companies and their partners to manage their global logistics and service operations in
real-time from Part Requests through Returns. In addition, WorldChain has joined Nortel Networks' Clarify E-Business
Applications Software Partner Program to jointly develop advanced, highly integrated e-Business solutions.

The integrated WorldChain-Clarify eFrontOffice solution will debut at the Nortel Networks Booth No. 2310 at the ICCM Call
Center Management Conference & Exposition, August 1-3, 2000 in Chicago. Show attendees can see the newly available
solution used to manage several scenarios commonly faced by field service representatives on a daily basis.

"WorldChain's solution extends the functionality of Clarify eFrontOffice to enable companies and their partners to globally
manage field service operations and inventory in real time through an integrated Internet application," said Joe Davis, vice
president and general manager, Clarify eBusiness Applications, Nortel Networks. "The ultimate benefits to Nortel Networks
customers will be to shorten order processing cycle times, reduce operating costs and improve overall customer loyalty."

"As companies strive to deliver first-class customer service they have increased their dependency on partners around the world,"
said Ray Homan, vice president of business development for WorldChain, Inc. "Operational information that was once
contained in their own enterprise systems now resides in their partners' enterprises scattered around the globe. As a result, these
equipment companies have lost visibility and control over their spares operations. With this relationship we will give back to
companies the visibility and control to effectively manage their service operations."

The new integrated solution is the first step towards the future development of an array of integrated e-business solutions
addressing customer support and service from both companies. WorldChain will work closely with Nortel Networks to develop
and offer robust eBusiness solutions to streamline customer relationship management and field service operations. The
integrated solution is available today from WorldChain.

Real-time Access For All Trading Partners

Through the integrated WorldChain and Nortel Networks solution, supply chain participants gain access to a complete
transaction set available over the Internet to track the movement of spares in and out of depots and in transit, and gain
visibility to the installation and return of those units from the field. In addition, WorldChain supports the transactions sets for
vendor-managed inventory and repair operations down to the serial number. Access to the inquiry transaction and reporting
functions is available on both wired and wireless Internet-enabled devices. With this feature set, WorldChain provides global
visibility, verification and control to the operations of trading partners, streamlining the support process.

WorldChain's Online Service for Value Chain Collaboration

The new integrated field service application offers the same complete trading partner coverage and real-time access benefits
featured in the recently announced WorldChain solution. The WorldChain solution provides manufacturing companies with an
Internet-powered solution for collaborative value chain operations. This managed application system enables trading partner
collaboration and provides real-time global visibility, verification, and control of inventory through the extended enterprise.
Manufacturing companies that implement the WorldChain solution can compress cycle times, reduce inventory costs, and
enhance customer satisfaction.

WorldChain's service is designed to automate the business processes of end-to-end supply chain operations as they relate to
key functional areas within manufacturing companies, including contract assembly, factory operations, distribution and service.
The solution provides companies with a complete, secure application suite supporting inquiries, transactions and reports.

This is the type of deal I was talking about when I said that the buying decisions have changed radically due to the melding/integration of distinct applications like voice-data-video over the same pipe.

Before, Carriers used to be able to buy Best-Of-Breed from different vendors depending on functionality (voice, data), application (VPN, circuit-switched, wireless, IP) and network component (core, edge, access, etc.).

Why? Because these functionalities, apps, network elements were quite often fairly discrete, independent networks.

Now that the world is undergoing a radical shift toward Convergence where different functionalities, apps, & network elements are very much integrated for both network efficiency and scalability, it is becoming MUCH MORE COMPLEX for a Service Operator-Carrier to buy discrete non-integrated components of the network and put it all together!

So what happens is that if a vendor like NT starts to be able to offer the best solution for the key components of network, the rest of the surround apps, software, and network extensions are more than likely also purchased from the General Contractor (NT of course).

I believe this is the strategy that NT will use to try and become the prime Contractor/Vendor which will give NT the leverage to upsell all the adjunct, enhanced applications that their secondary products like Alteon, Clarify, etc. will bring to the table.

Very compelling and if executed, they have the chance to become the next networking Gorilla in my opinion..........and the good thing is they have the depth of product & services/implementation & resources (engineering, software, technical, support) to actually pull it off.
