You nailed the gender/distance issue for horses right on the head.

I'll add one more.

In turf races (even at routes) fillies can compete well with colts also. The reason is that turf races develop differently than dirt races. Dirt races tend to be more demanding early and place a premium on stamina. Turf races are more evenly paced so you often see a mad sprint to the wire from the 3/8 - 1/2 mile pole home. Many of the best fillies can sprint 1/2 mile with the best colts so you see them win the big turf events from time to time. It's even more pronounced in Europe so you often see 3 yo fillies beating older colts in very big races.
