MRV acquires AstroTerra, creates Optical Access

7/28/2000 Newly formed Optical Access is the beneficiary of the acquisition of AstorTerra Corp. (San Diego, CA) by its parent company MRV Communications (Chatsworth, CA). This move, together with the acquisition of JOLT by MRV, positions Optical Access as a major supplier of solutions combining optical wireless and wavelength division multiplexing fiber technologies.
“We are very excited to join forces with an innovative, forward-thinking company like MRV Communications,” said Eric Korevaar, president of AstroTerra. “Combining our expertise in optical wireless technology with the comprehensive solution that Optical Access offers represents a strong step forward in bringing ultra high-speed wireless solutions to the last-mile telecommunications arena.''

AstroTerra’s intellectual property includes technology that uses multiple-transmit apertures to avoid atmospheric scintillation fade. This feature allows wireless optical transmission up to 5 km. In partnership with Lucent Technologies (Murray Hill, NJ), AstroTerra demonstrated a working laser communication system capable of transferring data at rates of 2.5 Gbit/s over a range of 2.4 km.

MRV expects to file for an initial public offering of Optical Access within 90 days.
