No respectable company runs FreeBSD? How about Yahoo, www.yahoo.com? Not respectable enough? -g- Then how about Microsoft hotmail, www.hotmail.com, or Sony, www.sony.co.jp? The most respectable companies that run linux-based web servers are www.dejanews.com, www.etoys.com, www.realnetworks.com, or even the British Royal Family www.royal.gov.uk You can find this out here: www.netcraft.com Linux binaries can be executed on FreeBSD. I'm not biased - we use linux & php for less important data collection web server. It does not matter if it crashes. But our main server runs FreeBSD. It just outperforms linux. Linux is a bit dangerous too - for novices - the easy installation can leave the system with a lot of security holes.

My god, Thomas. FreeBSD is notably more robust and reliable on the server compared to Linux. You would be the first person I've ever read contradict that. --- Linux' stregnth is the range of devices; the range of PCs that can be made into something useful. That, and the availability of desktop software (although FreeBSD will run Linux binaries). You probably wouldn't want to run a graphical workstation on FreeBSD (over Linux) but if you were going to run a web server or firewall, *BSD (Free, Net, Open) would be the first best choice of free OS'es assuming similar hardware support. -JCJ
