Eric: Interesting. You might wish also to look at the non-WAP alternatives. WAP seems to be faltering, and this may be very temporary, but again, it may not.

The use of full IP may be a better alternative on both sides of the wireless data / internet nexus, i.e. a common or closely related means of crossing that divide with minimal change required to do so.

That is where Qualcomm has a major advantage and why Dr Irwin Jacobs has made clear his view that WAP is more of a temporary or interim band aid type of solution required by the limitations of GSM data and the size of current phone screens than a long term lasting solution.
