Report II - Zaffire's Presentation at Oticon2000:

This part relates to my observations at the Zaffire Booth.

First, the presentations made there were highly technical in nature - when Near Margalit started talking about Lambda something I thought about barbecues and mint sauce so you can see I was out of my element.

In private conversations with Dr. Margalit (CTO and founder of Zaffire), a very young PhD who seems to be no more than 25 but is very personable and certainly very articulate, it's clear that he's a brilliant guy who knows his stuff. His father, Shlomo, was a professor at Cal Tech when he and others began MRV, having emigrated from Israel when Near was 4 years old.

A salesperson told me revenue shipments begin next month; he might have meant August but let's say September. Equipment is in Beta and on service trials at more than one site - he would not say where nor who nor how many such trials but my impression is that it's more than a few.

I asked about an IPO and got smiles...

An HR person was around and we discussed the fact that engineers from major companies had been coming up and asking about employment opportunities, taking the application forms which were concise and being handed out readily rather than waiting for someone to seek one out. Think of outfits like Lucent (which was named) and Cisco (possibly named or implied).

More products are coming but of course nothing could be revealed.

Checking other booths I would have to say that Zaffire's people showed a great deal of enthusiasm and there was good attendance - it was crowded. I wouldn't say that about too many others from my limited observation.
