It is my understanding that the upcoming Canon professional digital SLR camera, i.e. the D30, is to use a 3.25-million pixel CMOS image sensor.

Here is one man's opinion on its imaging capability:
4) Now here's the clincher: We've all heard about Canon's use of a CMOS sensor, instead of the standard CCD used by everyone else. I can tell you that the results from this method are absolutely stunning; I saw 8x10 pictures that were absolutely indistinguishable from film, no kidding. There were a series of pics that more than proved to me that this is the wave of the future, in terms of digital capture...I've seen no CCD that approaches this level of quality. The final proof was the last picture in the collection, a full night shot of a bridge...the bridge was the ONLY thing illuminated. When I tell you there was NO NOISE, I mean, from a distance of one inch, my eye could detect NO NOISE. Period. Overall, I've seen no pictures from any other camera under $20,000. that could compete with the D30 in available light...and BTW, that is NOT subjective, it is the irrefutable truth. No noise is no noise.

Whew!..potentially 16 megapixels? Now those are the type of imagers that might soak up a lot of flash memory storage requirements, eh? I as yet know of only one CMOS image sensor that exceeds 5 megapixels. It is shown here:

Now you may have already gathered that the sensor shown in the above link is fabbed by SanDisk's 'contingent' fab partner, with further discussion of their CMOS image sensors referenced here: Message 14148608

Incidentally, should they decide to go public, I think a future Photobit (www.photobit.com) IPO would likely be an absolute monster.
