not to mention that without shorts the bottom would fall out that much faster from many stocks...:)

You and I know that but I challenge you to convince them of that. That is so far over their heads they will never understand that concept. Hell they don't even know when to take a profit. :-))

heinz, total margin in DOLLARS is 5% below all time highs. Total margin in PERCENTAGE is 1/20th of all time highs. Isn't that kind of misleading?
