Not to mention a fiber optic play. Hey, GLW has an old-time name, maybe it can replace MO. <g> In any case, I don't find much use for a randomly chosen group of 30 stocks. While the SPX also gets revised, it's usually from the bottom and it's cap weighted. (Although the survivor factor obviously skews it to the positive side.)

I was quite amused last year when 13% of the Dow turned over in one day and I didn't see any of the Wall Street prognosticators change their Dow targets. I guessed they figured INTC and MSFT to perform inline with GT and S.

In late 1998 I submitted my 1999 yearend predictions to Business Week's survey without a Dow number. I was amazed that Don Hays and I had the exact same targets for the SPX and COMP. We were both "a little" off. <G>
