InfoSpace.Com ActiveShopper Competes with Inktomi

Keenan Vision Spot Analysis
Feb. 2, 1999

InfoSpace.Com announced ActiveShopper, an integrated service that will provide online shoppers the services they need to research and buy products and services in one
place. The features will include the ability to search online stores, catalogs and auctions as well as find product reviews, discussion groups and competitive prices. ActiveShopper
is a private label commerce solution for any Internet portal, destination site or Internet appliance. InfoSpace.Com said ActiveShopper will contain thousands of products from
hundreds of merchants and will support millions of queries. ActiveShopper is also due to be integrated with other InfoSpace.Com offerings, and will be distributed to the 1500
InfoSpace.Com affiliates. Due to be launched by June 30, 1999, ActiveShopper currently has Lycos, CMP Media, Xoom.Com, TechWave and Catalog City in a distribution and
partnership program.

In 1999 Keenan Vision predicts the online merchant world will begin a historic expansion, and the tens of thousands of smaller retailers, both independent and chain stores,
will need distribution channels to be heard screaming in cyberspace. Likewise, online buyers will need directory and searching services to help them navigate though the masses
of new merchants coming online. Also, as the Internet population becomes larger and more price-sensitive shoppers come online, price comparison engines will be in greater
demand. It also seems natural that the best shopping engines will come from a limited number of consolidators, and we believe that InfoSpace.Com's ActiveShopper program has
a chance of becoming a player.

InfoSpace.Com's announcement throws down the gauntlet in front of Inktomi's shopping service. In many respects, the services appear identical, but InfoSpace.Com and
Inktomi come at their distribution partners from different platforms of strength. InfoSpace.Com has an excellent reputation as a directory services provider, and Inktomi has
outsourced the Internet search service for many of the largest portal sites and search services. But, they are both in the business of providing private-labeled services for portal,
community and commerce sites. We believe there is an opportunity for both buying communities to survive, but the first-mover advantage here will be significant. Ultimately, the
winner between InfoSpace.Com and Inktomi will be determined by who can build and deploy the largest community of buyers and sellers the fastest. Let the race begin!
