Re: "This is the basic curve to look for an explanation. Evidently, Intel did not cover in testing of this part over a sufficient time to allow for all the failures the occur in the first part of the curve"

That's not the purpose of production test. That's what burnin is for. I don't know if Intel burns in their engineering samples nor do I know if Tom got an Engineering sample. If he got a production part, the chance of an early life failure is very very low. Well below 0.1%. Probably below 0.05%. A non burnedin part would have a slightly higher failure rate but still very low.

All this grand standing a picking apart of details is very entertaining. But it should not be the primary focus of investors. Intel has increasingly gotten into a race to pump up the bandwidth (G hz) against AMD. In the process they are probably pushing stuff out the door half baked and in limited production. So what? This is a marketing game and does not change the basic situation - that the market is very healthy and competitive. Intel will retain the majority market share for uPs but AMD will continue to eat away an increasing fractional share.

It's nice to know if Intel's new parts perform well and if they are stable so you can use them but what real difference does that make to the bottom line anytime soon?
