An interesting fact about the subsidy ban is that it doesn't seem to apply to 3G phones. So when SK Telecom rolls out with 1x later this year (yes I know 1x isn't "real" 3G, but it fits under the ITU specifications), they'll be able to offer subsidized phones while their competitors won't. Given the high penetration rates, a large percentage of subscribers there probably aren't bound by contracts. Which means that, asuming that the subsidy ban won't affet 1x phones, SK Telecom's offerings may look rather appealing to a number of those who subscribe to its competitors. This should make for an interesting situation given that they've been ordered to have their market share drop below 50% by June 2001 in return for approval of their merger with Shingessi Telecom.
