That's a faulty assumption. You need data on:
what percent of free-loaders would have paid if required.
what percent of free-loaders will eventually pay. (Try then buy, or try one free now, buy more later.)
what percent of buyers would not have bought without easy, free access.
what percent of buyers will become free-loaders.



You have to look at the flip side also.

How mnay free loaders who would not have bought but become good marketing tools because they spread (assuming the book is good).

What is th cost to the author of the free download (practically nothing) by a personw ho would otherwise not have bought.

What are the davantages of converting people from being non-readers (myabe they like it so much they want ot continue reading and also willing to PAY !).
