IBD on CREE: I compared the June 6, 2000 IBD rankings on Cree to the August 1, 2000 rankings (sponsorship ratings are only shown on Tuesdays, that's why those particular dates, otherwise I just wanted to see if anything had changed over time to indicate why the drop in stock price). It turns out that everything stayed constant except the "accumulation/distribution rating," which fell from "B" to "E" in that approximately 8 week period. The "a/d rating" tells you if a stock has been under accumulation or distribution during the preceding 3 months, based on IBD's proprietary measurement of price and volume change. "E" is the worst rating a stock can have, and the move from "B" to "E" in 8 weeks is a sharp one. I compared a number of the other G&K stocks as well, and nothing came close to this kind of distribution signal. (Note, however, that Siebel dropped from "A" to "C," for what that's worth.) I throw this out for comments. I haven't analyzed IBD's rating system over time for long enough to claim that the drop in the "a/d" rating means something definitive. It may be something to look at.
