jim, re: "The AMD machine is to use AMD DDR chipset."

Not in 2000, as you know...

sharkyextreme.com

The first 4 pages are an interesting read. Especially:

<<VIA should have their first Athlon DDR266 chipset finished or near finished by the end of 2000. Board makers had various opinions on whether or not VIA would be on time with DDR, but nobody we spoke with seemed to expect VIA or AMD Athlon DDR266 boards to actually hit the market before 2001. ......As far as chipsets are concerned, AMD will be moving along at a much slower pace than VIA.>>

and

<<Other major memory makers are likely in talks with Rambus so it looks like Rambus will profit from DDR's success as well as RDRAM's success. We did also manage to get a quote from a Rambus representative regarding these talks with other companies:

"...we [Rambus] are currently in discussions with companies regarding the licensing of Rambus IP for non-Rambus compatible uses such as those in SDRAM, DDR SDRAM and/or DDR FCRAM memory and/or controllers which directly interface with these types of memory."

To say it poetically, Rambus might have the entire memory industry by the happy sacks...>>
