Steven......

>>I have a feeling that Mr. Smart has led a somewhat sheltered life, at least by our standards (which admittedly are different than those of most Americans).>>

If this is any indication, I left home at 17, split with my folks, never returned and have worked all my life from ranches in Montana through every summer in college, holding multiple jobs, etc. I worked 18 years on Wall/LaSalle Streets, the first 6 directly with one of the toughest and largest traders in the world. Member of the merc (IOM division in the gold/S&P markets), traded upstairs on a regional electronic exchange, did reasearch, ghost wrote for newletters, mgr new prod dev for a major stock exchange and later director of marketing, partner & head of bus dev in a trading firm with opers on 4 exchanges/platforms and for the past 2 1/2 years running my own company. I have travelled and spoken extensively, sung in a quartet/chorus in public for 10 years and now sing in public and in competitions with my two boys - ages 3 and 6 - in addition to coaching a boys 4-6 year old Rookie League baseball. While growing up I played 4 sports each year, lettering in three sports (football/basketball/baseball) and was good enough to win All area honors and an invitation to walk onto Northwestern Univ football team as a quarterback. I'm an avid writer, composer, love kids and married to a loving wife for the past 10 years. I have had an enduring love for elderly folks and have many friends in Finland, a land and people very near and dear to my heart.

So what.....

Big deal. Means nothing.

What's your story???

>>I also have a sneaking suspicion that his dogma are not original, that someone in his vicinity is scooping out the smarmy stuff with a soup ladle and he is lapping it up without question.>>

That's your opinion to which you are entitled to. I get everything I learn and "know" from risking/serving/helping others. All the answers to any question I have had comes from simple, pure inspiration and a deep spiritual grounding and abiding faith which comes from my family heritage - where you will find a more than a few very religious all the way to evangelical ministers.

>>I once asked him to define, in specific and practical terms, what he meant by "service". It was my only post to him that was not answered. I thought that revealing.>>

"Service" - a definition.

Actions which place the giver in a completely humble - lesser - position at risk of loss/humiliation as one reaches out to lift up and help one's fellow man without the expection of receiving anything in return including private or public praise.

The purest symbol of service was that of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples.
