What Scott reported was not wrong. The reaction was. A few months ago prices for semi equips got ahead of the results: they were priced to perfection. The real business world is seldom perfect.

Blame fluctuations in stock prices on those most responsible, the investors. Yes, Kulicke helped investors think nice thoughts but what do you expect - he was able to sell tons of stock when investors were bouncing off the walls in fantasy land. You should have sold when he did.

Japanese domestic shipments of personal computers rose 35 percent in the three months through June, powered for a eighth straight quarter by demand from consumers looking for Internet access, industry figures showed.

PC makers such as NEC Corp., Fujitsu Ltd., Toshiba Corp. and Hitachi Ltd. shipped 2.74 million units in the first quarter, up from 2.03 million in the same period a year ago, the Japan Electronics industry Development Association said.

Computer ownership in Japan is growing as more Japanese use online services to shop, look for information and access entertainment services. According to the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, the number of users in Japan using a computer modem and phone lines to access the Internet rose 11 percent to 12.53 million in the three months to June 30.

"About 99 percent of Japanese consumers looking to buy a PC are wanting to use the Internet," said Katsushi Shiga, a principal analyst at Dataquest, a unit of Gartner Group Japan K.K."Internet demand and PC demand are directly linked."

The value of domestic PC shipments in the quarter total 491 billion yen ($4.5 billion), up 15 percent from the same period a year earlier, the association said. That excludes shipments of peripherals such as printers, displays and modems.
In the quarter ended March 31, Japan's domestic PC shipments rose 30 percent to 3.14 million units from the same period a year ago. Sales to households accounted for 47 percent of all PC shipments.
