Japanese computer shipments rise by a third By Bloomberg News August 3, 2000, 11:40 a.m. PT TOKYO--Japanese domestic shipments of personal computers rose 35 percent in the three months through June, powered for an eighth straight quarter by demand from consumers looking for Internet access, industry figures showed. PC makers such as NEC, Fujitsu, Toshiba and Hitachi shipped 2.74 million units in the first quarter, up from 2.03 million in the same period a year ago, the Japan Electronic Industry Development Association (JEIDA) said. Computer ownership in Japan is growing as more Japanese use online services to shop, look for information and access entertainment services. According to the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, the number of people in Japan using a computer, modem and phone lines to access the Internet rose 11 percent to 12.53 million in the three months to June 30. "About 99 percent of Japanese consumers looking to buy a PC are wanting to use the Internet," said Katsushi Shiga, a principal analyst at Dataquest, a unit of Gartner Japan. "Internet demand and PC demand are directly linked." For the year to March 2001, the association forecast that domestic PC shipments will rise 16 percent from last year to 11.5 million units. PC sales in the world's second-largest economy began to reverse a two-year retreat after Microsoft introduced its Windows 98 operating system in Japan in July 1998 and Apple unveiled its eye-catching iMac computer in August that year. Individual consumers wanting access to the Internet are leading the buying rush, attracted by the design and ease of use of the newest generation of PCs and the increasing adoption of larger screens in notebook models. "The 35 percent rise was better than our expectations," said Kazuyuki Ide, an association official. The value of domestic PC shipments in the quarter totaled $4.5 billion (491 billion yen), up 15 percent from the same period a year earlier, the association said. That excludes shipments of peripherals such as printers, displays and modems. In the quarter ended March 31, Japan's domestic PC shipments rose 30 percent to 3.14 million units from the same period a year ago. Sales to households accounted for 47 percent of all PC shipments. The JEIDA surveys 17 computer companies that account for about 90 percent of the Japanese market. Copyright 2000, Bloomberg L.P. All Rights Reserved.
