Good Morning Gene:

re: <Any thoughts on how this may impact conversion of wafers to RDRAM?>

If I had the answer to that I wouldn't be posting here <VBG>. IMO, it is key to the outcome of the industry-conversion-to-RDRAM story. Which is cause and which is effect? One could speculate forever on this:

-- Are the prices going up because of RDRAM dies displacing SDRAM (in addition to the other reasons, ie., this semi cycle being "different")?

-- Or are the DRAM mfrs withholding conversion to RDRAM because of it?

-- Or was the INTC SDRAM-for-P4 announcement a ploy to drive RDRAM spot prices down in order to favorably impact contracts that are currently under negotiation?

-- Certainly, higher SDRAM prices make it easier for the reticent DRAMURAI to stay put, until they miss the boat. Capitalism abhors a vacuum. Also, their gross margins are getting so high (50%), that the BS argument about RMBS royalties killing the industry is without merit.

-- Interesting to note that Micron (despite the common wisdom which prevails due their effective DDR sales pitch) IS producing RDRAM. The Kipp-ster let that one slip whilst trying to assassinate RDRAM in the press last week.

Regarding your query about incentives, the DRAMurai do not seem to working on that basis. My impression is that the plan here is to delay (with the public relations jihad that we are in the middle of) RDRAM acceptance as long as is possible in order to allow for the birthing of desktop DDR. Looks like DDR needs another 12 months gestation time. I see guppy food for RMBS.
